“1995”: My Tribute to the ’90s

One of my favorite things I love to do is write lyrics to songs. This week I was feeling super nostalgic about the decade I grew up in: the ’90s. So I thought of all the ’90s references I could think of and rewrote the lyrics to SR-71/Bowling For Soup’s “1985.”

You can listen to the real song here:

Here is my detailed tribute to my favorite decade:

“1995”

Woohoohoo
Woohoohoo

Kenny just hit the wall
He thought he’d have it all
Now works at a small firm
Preparing tax returns
His dreams went down the tubes
When he turned twenty-two
He was gonna have a band
What happened to his plans?

Screen shot 2014-02-13 at 11.43.14 AM

He was gonna be a rock star
and trash all the good hotels
He was gonna drive a Viper
And appear on TRL
His Toyota Prius-V
is now the enemy
Looks at his average life
and nothing has been all right

Since Alanis, Oasis
(before they changed their bassist)
There was Liz Phair, Third Eye Blind
And cassettes you had to rewind
His old friends from high school
They tell him he’s so old-school
‘Cause he’s still preoccupied
With 1995

He’s seen all the classics
He knows every line
Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump,
and even Rocky 5
He rocked out to grunge
Boy bands, not so much
No one was a bigger fan
of the Dave Matthews Band

Where’s the long-sleeved shirt
made of flannel?
Why is there a singing show
on every other channel?
When did reality become TV?
Whatever happened to after-school specials?
And Mentos commercials?

Alanis, Oasis
(before they changed their bassist)
There was Garbage, The Verve Pipe
And mixed tapes you had to rewind
His old friends from high school
They tell him he’s so old-school
‘Cause he’s still preoccupied
With 1995

Woohoohoo
He hates time, make it stop
When did everything become club-dance-pop?
And when did Marky Mark become an actor?
Please make this stop
Stop!
And bring back

Alanis, Oasis
(before they changed their bassist)
There was Pearl Jam, Third Eye Blind
And cassettes you had to rewind
His old friends from high school
They tell him he’s too old-school
‘Cause he’s still preoccupied
With 1995

Woohoohoo

I wrote two alternates for the second verse, but I decided not to use them for various reasons:

He was gonna be a rock star
He was gonna be a god
He was gonna wreck hotels
With his 9-member entourage

OR

He was gonna be a rock star
He was gonna find himself
In the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
or at least on TRL

  1. Awesome post Kory! I miss the ’90s as well. Although my ’90s are a bit different than yours, it’s the longing for past times that’s the same. Nat Geo did a great show on the ’80s last year, and they are working on one for the ’90s titled “The Last Great Decade.” It sure was.
